Why was the ‘father of modern chemistry’ decapitated?

Antoine Lavoisier is widely considered as the ‘father of modern chemistry’. Lavoisier was beheaded under the guillotine. He is said to have changed the science from a qualitative to quantitative one. At the height of French Revolution, he was accused of selling adulterated tobacco and other crimes, and was eventually guillotined.
