The banyan tree – the national tree of India

The banyan tree, or Indian fig tree (Ficus benghalensis), is considered a symbol of immortality and is mentioned in many Indian myths and legends. This self-renewing plant is India’s national tree. The tree can grow up to several hectares using its prop roots, which grow down from the tree trunk into woody structures.

Trees that can live for 1,000 years

Olive  has  been  the  symbol  of  peace  for  thousands  of  years. Their roots are spread really wide, which enables them to survive drought conditions. A typical olive tree can live 1,000 years or more because the root can regenerate the entire tree if the original tree is destroyed.
