Conjoined twins got a new lease of life at AIIMS
Shaily and Shilpa were born as conjoined twins with fused abdomen and chest on 19 Nov 2012. Their livers, the largest solid organ in human body, were fused in the middle. They have been separated successfully by a 30-member team of doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), and they have got even their own share of the liver. It took the team four months to plan the surgery. Conjoined twins are reported 1 in 50,000 to 200,000 births, and the chance of survival is one per cent.
