The film Bicycle Thieves (Ladri di biciclette) is a heart-warming tale of the father and son who search all through the city of Rome for the stolen bicycle which is the only means to ensure their livelihood. Ray started his career as a commercial artist and he got inspired into independent film making after meeting French film-maker Jean Renoir and viewing the Italian neorealist 1948 film Bicycle Thieves. Vittorio De Sica’s famous movie Bicycle Thieves inspired Indian film maestro Satyajit Ray to become a director.

Benode Behari Mukhopadhyay was an eminent Bengali painter and muralist. He taught in Vishva Bharati University in 1925. He was born with serious defects in his eyes. He was myopic in one eye and blind in the other. He became totally visually impaired when his myopic eye was operated upon in 1956. He continued to paint and do murals even after that. Satyajit Ray made a documentary The Inner Eye based on his life.
