India: The world’s largest democracy

India has the second highest population in the world, and is the largest democracy in the world. The country has around 1.2 billion residents, of which 834 million are eligible to vote. Universal Adult Franchise gives every Indian citizen the right to vote after reaching the age of 18. This essential right is the backbone of the country’s democratic governance mechanism.

Which eminent personality died the same day as Mahatma Gandhi?

Orville Wright is considered as the ‘father of modern aviation’. Together with his brother Wilbur, he invented the first airplane. He developed flight technology for the  United States Army. Mahatma Gandhi, an international figure symbolizing peace, the Father of the Indian Nation, ushered in the Indian independence through non-violent means. Both Orville Wright and Mahatma Gandhi died on the same day, i.e. January 30, 1948.

Swami Vivekananda and the Fourth of July

Swami Vivekananda was born as Narendranath Datta on January 12, 1863. He was an avid scholar of Western and Hindu Philosophy. He is one of the most admired spiritual leaders all over the world who left an indelible mark in history with his teachings. He celebrated the American Day of Independence on 4 July by penning the poem ‘To the Fourth of July’ and having it read specifically on the 4th of July 1901. He passed away exactly a year later on 4 July 1902.
