The Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) came into being on 26th September 1985, by replacing its earlier counterpart – the Ministry of Education. In the present day, the MHRD is in charge of two departments:
- Department of School Education and Literacy
- Department of Higher Education
The Department of School Education and Literacy aims at achieving ‘universalization of education’ in India. Through various reforms and policies, it attempts to make education available to all sections of the society. The department also takes necessary steps to prevent commercialization of education.
All matters related to secondary and post-secondary education are dealt by the Department of Higher Education. The department works to ensure that Indian students have access to the best educational and research opportunities in the country. The department sees to the availability of necessary infrastructure to ensure that Indian students are competent on an international level.
The MHRD focuses on the holistic development of young minds. The ministry is actively involved in the task of ‘man-making’ which is an important component of the nation-building process.
