Jamsetji Tata’s offer to Swami Vivekananda

Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata was in the same ship in which Swami Vivekananda travelled to the USA on his historic trip to represent the Hindu religion at the Chicago Parliament of Religions, 1893. Both of them had a focused discussion on the spread of science education in India. Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata offered Swami Vivekananda the post of the founder director of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, as he was inspired by Vivekananda to set up a research and educational institution. But Swamiji declined the offer referring it to be in conflict with his ‘spiritual interests’.
