Lake Baikal, situated in the south-east Siberia in Russia, is the deepest lake in the world. Known as the Galapagos of Russia, it is one of the richest and diverse repositories of flora and fauna. The depth of Lake Baikal is 1700 metre. This 25 million years old lake has oxygen-rich waters and numerous atypical life forms.
It is located at the splitting point of Asia, in a cleft which is forming a future ocean.
According to geologists, Lake Baikal today shows how the coastlines of North America, Africa and Europe looked like as they began to separate millions of years ago.
