Shane Warne’s ball of the century

The iconic image of Mike Gatting getting bowled by Shane Warne on day two of the Ashes Test in June 1993 will always resonate the cricket fraternity. It is called the ‘Ball of the Century’ or simply the ‘Gatting Ball’. Warne bowled over the wickets and the rapidly spinning ball drifted towards the right due to the Magnus Effect, but after pitching on the rough outside the leg stump, it spun, beat Gatting’s near perfect defence, still kept drifting and dislodged the bail over the off and middle stump. Mike Gatting later expressed that he felt privileged on being bowled by that delivery.
