‘Older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend’

Mark Twain described Varanasi as – ‘Older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend’.

Samuel Langhorne Clemens, famously known as Mark Twain, visited India with his wife in the year 1895–96 on their way to the world trip. He visited Bombay, Delhi and Benares. While in Benares, he took a boat ride on the Ganga. He was fascinated by Benares.
